About the artist

GM Grant painting from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia

It begins with the artistic equivalent of the tree falling in the forest question:

If art is presented without its accompanying thesis, does it maintain the same impact, or does the work untether from its intended effect? GmGrant answers that question with paint instead of words, feeling that it’s the viewer, not the artist, who must provide the reaction and interpretation. In lieu of being told what to think, his paintings challenge audiences to react, interpret and feel for themselves.

He bases much of his current work on the concept of “The Patterning Instinct”; the idea that humans will always work to supply a story (a pattern), even if the elements might be purposefully incongruous (or secretly not). This approach places you, the viewer, in partnership with the artist, engaged in a mutual search for meaning and connection.

Original Paintings

Oil, acrylic, watercolor and whatever moves you

There is no perfect medium, but there are mediums that are perfect for the subject. GmGrant enjoys finding the limits within each, coaxing an oil finish out of acrylics, or causing a viewer to look twice when discovering a realistic figurative painting is actually a watercolor. In any case, the medium serves the image, and the image serves the viewer with a vivid, visceral impact.

Archival Prints

Hand-signed

Each signed print uses heavy-stock acid-free paper that won't yellow over time, coupled with archival-grade inks, that present true colors and resist fading.

Commissions

It Begins With Consultation

The process starts with a thorough understanding of the patron's wishes. From there, the actual work might revolve around live sittings, or, pending practical realities of time and availability, can be based on an amalgam of source photos, subject to artist interpretation.
